"european school of the 18th century collaborator of jean-etienne liotard
portrait of marie-anne (1718-1744), duchess of lorraine, archduchess of austria
comment: younger sister of empress marie-thérèse, archduchess marie-anne married the duke of lorraine charles, himself brother of marie-thérèse's husband, in january 1744, before dying prematurely in december of the same year. It was probably around this date that liotard, staying in vienna between 1743 and 1745, painted his portrait, at the same time as several other effigies of the imperial family. His autobiography reveals the presence at his side of several collaborators to fulfill orders and make copies of princely portraits, among whom some are named, such as jean adam serre and peter kobler. Preserved in the collections of weimar castle, a version of liotard's pastel portrait of the archduchess of austria presents some variations with the portrait we are presenting: she is in fact represented in a frame that reveals more of her richly embroidered dress, and wears jewels in her hair which do not appear in the more sober portrait presented here. ". Date: 18th century. Dimensions: height: 55 cm (21.6 in); width: 44 cm (17.3 in). Medium: pastel on paper. Collection: Unidentified location.
