The monitor 'marshal ney' under tow off a dockyard setting, probably in the medway a watercolour study of two black naval tugs, with ochre funnels, manoeuvring a british monitor with a massive tripod mast. The ship is the 'marshal ney' (1915), and the location probably the medway in 1918-19. This monitor's 15-inch gun turret was removed in february 1916 on the tyne and by 1918 she had a uniform armament of six 6-inch guns. The hull appears very foreshortened and is probably seen in starboard quarter view, with an anchor hanging vertically at the bow. Date: circa 1919. Dimensions: 176 mm x 251 mm. Collection: Fine art.
