Author(s): pater, jean-baptiste (valenciennes, 29–12–1695 - paris, 25–07–1736), painter date of production: between 1715 and 1736 dating in centuries: 1st half of the 18th century type(s) of object(s): painting name(s): table materials and techniques: oil paint, canvas (material) dimensions - artwork: height: 54cm width: 69. 5cm dimensions - frame: height: 77. 7cm width: 91. 8 cm thickness: 7. 6cm iconographic description: this painting represents a gallant scene in an unreal landscape, with a colonnade on the left and houses in the background. Three groups of characters are represented there. On the left, next to a dog, a woman seated with her back to her, with a little girl leaning on her knees, faces a turbaned servant who presents her with a basket. In the center, a mandolin musician plays for five seated figures who are conversing or reading. On the right, a woman, holding a fan, walks next to a dog. A man and a child stand behind her. Historical commentary: following his master watteau, pater represented almost exclusively gallant scenes, a term used in the 18th century to designate scenes of daily life embellished and transformed by the introduction of costumes and accessories borrowed from the theater. The influence of the theater is obvious here: the unreal landscape, brushed in a light smear, resembles a set with its conventional architecture and its blue distances; the characters have stereotypical attitudes; on the right, walkers seem to be coming out from behind the scenes. Themes / subjects / places represented: genre scene, pastoral scene, colonnade, musician, nobility, fan, dog, book, gallantry mode of acquisition: legacy name of donor, testator, seller: dutuit, auguste and eugène date of acquisition: 1902 institution: petit palais, museum of fine arts of the city of paris inventory number: pdut878 exposed: petit palais ground floor room 10 (this room has included the old room 09 and room 10 of the tuck gallery since 06/18/2020).
