iconographic description:
the scene takes place in a rural landscape of perros-guirec (brittany) in summer. Four men carry a coffin covered with a cloth with a cross motif. They are followed by a funeral procession made up of men and women in black who pass on a path bordered by unfinished haystacks and a field. The women wear a headdress and the first in line hold an umbrella. Historical commentary:
essentially an engraver and landscaper, henri rivière is one of the major artists of color prints. He successfully practiced color lithography but the peak of his art remained his color woodblocks. In his works there is a profound influence of the japanese prints that he admires and collects. The wood presented here belongs to "breton landscapes", one of his two series of woodcuts and, quantitatively, the most important. Themes / subjects / places represented:
