Procession of the Deacon Angels (detail), Józef Mehoffer, between 1898 and 1900

Procession of the Deacon Angels (detail), Józef Mehoffer, between 1898 and 1900

The detail from the eucharistic window shows the procession of angels who, as deacons, stride towards the altar. They are swinging censers. The clouds of smoke support the movement from the lower right to the left in the centre of the picture and link the two halves of the picture. In terms of colour, the clouds of smoke merge with the white clothes of the personification of the faithful. The ram at the bottom left has become entangled in the thorny bushes. It reminds us that a ram was sacrificed instead of isaac. This old testament sacrificial lamb points to the new testament: christ sacrificed himself for humanity. This is depicted - not visible in this detail of the picture - in the taking down of the cross. Object Type: painting. Genre: Art Nouveau. Date: between 1898 and 1900. Place of creation: en:Fribourg, Switzerland. Dimensions: 4 strips à height: 670 cm (21.9 ft); width: 70 cm (27.5 in). Medium: stained glass. Collection: nave-aisle. Cathedral Fribourg vitrail Eucharistie 05
