iconographic description:
this painting dates from hubert robert's youth when he lived and worked in rome. The common people of rome have shamelessly settled in the ruins which they reuse for prosaic purposes. These unexpected scenes, discovered during a walk in the eternal city, struck the painter's imagination and entered into his iconographic repertoire for a long time. His contemporaries would later see it as an illustration of the attacks of time which inexorably destroys evidence of the greatness of past civilizations. But for now, the young artist is having fun and enjoying the pleasure of painting. Here is an ancient monument transformed into a “dye house”, the place where the fabrics are whitened. The strong contrast of light and shadow, the large draperies and the vertical lines of the slatted barriers clearly punctuate the composition. The vapors of the fire which vibrate the atmosphere are the pretext for a dazzling piece of painting. Historical commentary:
"the laundry" was part of the collection of j. S. Young (shuffield, kent). Then, it was located in a private collection in heidelberg. In 1992, it was put up for sale in the cailleux gallery, in paris, and purchased at the beginning of the following year by the petit palais museum, from arrears from the dutuit legacy, for 1,200,000 francs.
