D. Sebastião (1737) - Guilherme Debrie, Vieira Lusitano, 1737

King sebastian of portugal (1737), by william debrie (drawn by francisco vieira lusitano). The engraving depicts the king wearing an armour, facing the viewer and holding a baton. Beneath his likeness, the portuguese coat of arms, with the royal crown on top. Two of the fates, clotho and larchesis, stare at the king, holding a spindle and a thread. On a banner, it is written: «vivo equidem, vitamque. Extremam per omnia duco», a reference to the king's misfortune. Date: 1737. Medium: engraving.
