historical commentary:
the first stone of the bridge intended to connect the champs-elysées to the invalides was laid on the right bank on october 7, 1896, in the presence of félix faure and tsar nicolas ii. The first watertight compressed air box was installed in 1897. An overhead crane intended for the construction of the metal superstructure was installed in august 1898 and the assembly of the arches began in november. These latter elements do not appear in the drawing. The bridge was opened for the universal exhibition of 1900 (cf. "bridges of paris" j. Van de putte, 199, p. 178 to 187).
