The lachine canal workers' strike, in: public opinion vol. 9, no. 2 (january 10, 1878), p. 22
“in return for his 12 hours of hard work daily, the irish laborer expects to receive a salary of 3. 5 shillings. But now the entrepreneur, henry mason, decides to offer only two shillings which he will pay, moreover, not in cash, but rather in the form of vouchers or credit notes exchangeable at the grocery store which he obligingly makes available to his employees!
already subject to dismal housing conditions - workers and their families were crammed 10 or 12 into shanties or wooden barracks measuring less than 15 m2 - irish workers revolted and began a long conflict. They ultimately won't gain much from it, other than the abolition of the credit score system, which all the good souls of the time agree to describe as shameless exploitation. » – ville. Montreal.
