The portrait depicts the russian count nikita ivanovich panin (1718‑1783). He was a politician and diplomat and during the years 1748-1759 russian envoy in stockholm. Signed roslin suédois. Oil on canvas, 72 x 57. 5 cm. Painting by alexander roslin (1718-1793). Compare with roslin's larger-format portrait of count panin seated at a desk dated 1777, in the collections of the pushkin museum, moscow. With label written in russian, the translation reads: "the department for matters relating to museums and the management of art and ancient monuments at the people's commissariat for education. Artist roslen aleks. Title portrait. By count panin n. I. Owner v. A. Charitonenko individual no inventory no. 439" provenance: vera andrejevna charitonenko (1859‑1923), then in a swedish private collection. Date: 1 January 1775.
