Joao, Senhor de Reguenos

Joao, Senhor de Reguenos

Detail of kneeling knight in the "panel of the archbishop" (fourth panel of the st. Vincent panels, usually dated c. 1470, attributed to painter nuno gonçalves). Figure is most commonly identified as the royal prince ferdinand, duke of viseu, the younger brother of afonso v of portugal, who died in 1470 aged 37, although there is no consensus on this identification. A recent controversial book (almeida and albuquerque, 2000), which dates the painting 1445, proposes instead it is an image of prince john of reguengos, constable of portugal (died 1442, aged 42).
