The Organ (Sandys), Joseph Swain, 23 March 1861

Wood engraving, illustration for the poem "the organ" by ludwig uhland, in once a week magazine, volume 4, page 350. "death, the subject of this illustration to a german ballad, is lugubriously depicted as an organist rises from his instrument and turns to look at the recently expired body of a man lying nearby. The figure of death is depicted as a skeleton, who is working the bellows of the organ. " (delaware art museum). Date: 23 March 1861.
