Full length, standing, head in three quarters, turned to the left, dressed in a white dress surrounded by a red scarf, madame calès holds a flower in her right hand, and her left hand is placed on a botany book containing the engraving of a plant at the bottom of which we read: “sida crastifolia, p. S. Redouté, del. » above this engraving, in a half-open book, on the first page, is the portrait of j. Calès, to which is attached the following title: "the genera of plants by ch. Linné", translated by j. M. C. . . . Nierre (sic), edition in 2 volumes, first part, in paris, year vii of the republic. Given to the museum by mr. Poupardin, september 20, 1860. Marie-sylphide chardon, born in sedan, first married to gabriel-etienne poupardin du rivage, from orléans, and secondly to jean-marie calès, deputy to the national convention. This portrait, donated to the museum by the poupardin family, was long attributed by david, calès' colleague at the convention, like many portraits which have since been attributed to other painters; david would have offered his work to his model: at least that is what is tradition in the poupardin family.
