Kietz, the son of a senior postal secretary and a former actress, graduated from 1831 to 1838 he studied at the art academy in dresden. During this time he took part in several dresden academy exhibitions and presented portraits of dresden society. In 1838, kietz continued his artistic training in paris, where he was accepted into the workshop of paul delaroche (1797-1856).
