The portrait shows heinrich heine (1797-1856) in profile to the right with a lowered gaze, drawn by ernst benedikt kietz (1815-1892) in paris in 1851. Kietz, the son of a senior postal secretary and a former actress, graduated from 1831 to 1838 he studied at the art academy in dresden. During this time he took part in several dresden academy exhibitions and presented portraits of dresden society. In 1838, kietz continued his artistic training in paris, where he was accepted into the workshop of paul delaroche (1797-1856). During his stay in paris he developed a close friendship with richard wagner. Between 1841 and 1857, kietz took part in several exhibitions at the paris salon. His travels took him to malta, constantinople, athens and rome before he settled in épernay from around 1858. He returned to germany in 1870 and during the franco-prussian war he worked as a drawing teacher for the daughters of frederick viii of schleswig-holstein, including the future empress auguste viktoria, at primkenau castle in silesia. After his return to dresden, he continued his artistic activity and acted as a drawing teacher for princess mathilde of saxony. – slightly brown and foxed. Decorative. ". Date: 1851.
