Caritas romana, oil sketch by murillo for a painting of the same title that was destroyed in a fire, at the philadelphia academy of fine arts, in 1845. The painting belonged to the manuel godoy collection. After the napoleonic invasion of spain, the engraver who had it in order to make an engraving, tomás lópez enguídanos, fled to valencia taking the painting with him, meaning to save it from the clutches of joseph bonaparte, although in the end he had to sell it for economic reasons. It was bought and brought it to the united states, and it was already at the philadelphia academy of fine arts before 1814. There, it get destroyed in a fire in 1845. Apparently, it was the first painting of murillo to arrive in the united states. Dimensions of the sketch: 12 ¼ x 16 inches / 31. 3 x 40. 8 cm.
