Artemis, Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1893 / 1894

The protagonist of the picture is the hunting goddess artemis (diana in roman mythology). She is accompanied by the harvest goddess demeter. On the right stands artemis's twin brother apollo. Hammershøi himself has said that he only chose the title of the picture shortly before he was to exhibit it for the first time in 1894 (cf. Statement to emil hannover; quoted vad, 1988, p. 123f. ).
