Gwalior had been the capital of an influential state and was renowned for its huge fortress, built on a narrow and long rocky hill of sandstone. The fortress, with its impressive line of battlements and bastions, was considered impregnable until 1780, when a small group of british soldiers scaled the walls during the night and captured it.
