HMS 'General Wolfe' RMG PV2675, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1918

Hms 'general wolfe' inscribed by the artist, lower right, 'general wolf[e]'. This is a not particularly accurate port-broadside drawing of the monitor 'general wolfe' (1915) fitted with an 18-inch gun aft and a twin 12-inch gun turret forward. The 18-inch gun was fitted at portsmouth dockyard in july 1918 and her gun trials were carried out off the isle of wight on 7 august. The 18-inch gun was on a fixed mounting and was permanently aimed to starboard, with two pom-pom guns fitted on top of its housing, as shown here. The vesselwas built by palmer's shipbuilding & iron co. Ltd at hebburn, on the tyne,was launched on 9 september 1915 and completed on 9 november. She served at dover throughout the war and was broken up at hayle from december 1923. [btodd/pvdm 2/13]. Date: circa 1918. Dimensions: 252 mm x 354 mm. Collection: Fine art.
