The "paraíso" altarpiece, so called since it comes from the main altar of the extinct convento do paraíso in lisbon, has already been the subject of some studies that resulted in diverse and divergent opinions regarding its authorship. At first, the set was attributed to grão vasco (vasco fernandes), by taborda and cirilo, an opinion refuted by raczynski who proposed the name abram prim (primus). Carl justi named the painter velascus as the author and émile bartaux divided the series into two sets, attributing the "annunciation", the "visitation" and the "nativity" to cristóvão de figueiredo, and the other panels to the "master of the santiago altarpiece". It was, however, josé de figueiredo who regrouped the eight paintings and framed them in the work of the "master of paradise", which was supported by reinaldo dos santos. Myron malkiel-jirmounsky was responsible for alerting us to the fact that we are in the presence of a collective work and not that of a single painter. Currently, and in the wake of this last historian, even though the name of gregório lopes stands out in the attribution of this altarpiece set, there is no doubt in saying that it is a work of partnership, which is immediately visible in the pictorial and technical heterogeneity of the various tablets that compose it.
