At the hermitage in weimar park colored engraving by georg melchior kraus, 1788. Built in 1788 as a hermitage, the hermitage opposite goethe's garden house was later converted by the duke into a solid, heated wooden house that met the young man's practical needs, which were mixed with his love of nature, but could not really meet the needs of a man who was a general in the field for rest. Carl august of saxe-weimar therefore asked goethe from the field to build him a house in the park so that he could find a place to rest after the hardships of war. He left the construction to his friend, as their needs had always been the same. In 1792 the foundation stone was laid for the "roman house" built by the hamburg architect ahrens, and the furnishings were completed in 1797. Date: 1788.
