Alone in her room, marguerite (gretchen), to right, sits despondently on a chest and leans against a wall, a book carelessly left on the floor beside her; she holds a piece of wool listlessly in both hands and her spinning-wheel is on her far side; to left a vase of flowers on a table covered with a rug, and drapery in the foreground and background. 1827 lithograph.
