Monument to king leopold i of belgium in laeken park in 1880. — the monument to king leopold i (now called “monument of the dynasty”), in flamboyant neo-gothic style, was built in 1880 by the ghent architect louis de curte (1817-1891). It is located in the park of laeken, facing the gates of the royal castle of laeken. Its nine arcades topped with nine pinnacles (small openwork pyramids) symbolize the unity of the nine provinces and that of belgium behind its king. Each province has its effigy sculpted by a known artist of the time. The spire rises to a height of 43 meters and rests on a massive masonry 16 meters deep. A spiral staircase in a column cage provides access to the floors. However, it is closed to the public. In the engraving, we can see at the top of the spire the copper statue of an angel. As the statue could not withstand bad weather, it was removed and placed on one of the wings of the museum of fine arts in brussels. Date: 1880.
