There are two versions of this painting (as well as a largely monochrome study in copenhagen). The larger and better known version is the one in the musée d'orsay. This is the smaller version, held in the whitney collection until 1990 when it was sold at sotheby's, new york, for the then record price of us$78 million. The painting is now believed to be in a swiss private collection. Other than in size, the paintings are almost identical, one evidently being an exact copy of the other, although the whitney version is executed more freely. It is not known which was first exhibited, nor even which first painted. This scan is from the sotheby's sale catalogue 17 may 1990. The original was a fold-out with a central crease. The left and right portions were scanned separately and then stitched. The fold line runs just to the right of the central figure's left cheek. A strip 12 pixels wide corresponding to this crease was cropped out. The registration of the two pieces is not completely perfect. Object Type: painting. Date: 1876. Dimensions: height: 78 cm (30.7 in); width: 114 cm (44.8 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Private collection. Auguste Renoir - Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette (ex Whitney collection)
