four people stand in a garden at night, presumably to observe the stars. On the left, two gentlemen, one of whom is represented with the head of an eagle and the other that of a rhinoceros, use a telescope to see the constellations. Behind them, two young people pay no attention to the stars and prefer to kiss each other. However, the young woman holds, at the same time, the old amateur astronomer rhinoceros by the arm. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "among these fanatics of science [astronomy], grandville had distinguished an adept whose passion had no equal among his fellow citizens. This adept was the rhinoceros [. . . ] he absolutely wanted to involve his family in his studies and in his enthusiasm. [. . . ]his wife and [his] second cousin [. . . ] ended up getting used to it"
