Frescoes of the Trakai Island Castle, depicting Vytautas the Great (19th century watercolor painting), Wincenty Smokowski, 1822

It is known that the walls of the trakai island castle were richly decorated with gothic paintings. The great hall of the castle was particularly oronate as its walls and window niches were painted in the so-called fresco secco technique. It was painted in the manner of the byzantine provincial school of the first quarter of the 15th century. Painted ornaments and multi-figure compositions with secular themes were for the most part a eulogy for the grand duke of lithuania vytautas the great and his courtiers. Not only the interior of the castle but also the façades of the palace were decorated in polychrome. Unfortunately, the remains of the trakai island castle wall paintings have survived only in watercolor paintings made by artists in the 19th century. Date: 1822.
