Bol à thé (chawan), M.C. 4056(2), Entre 1800 et 1868

Author(s): ochawan factory (karatsu) production date: between 1800 and 1868 dating in century: 19th century type(s) of object(s): ceramic, japan name(s): tea bowl materials and techniques: stoneware, glaze = covered, slip place(s) of execution/production: karatsu dimensions - artwork: height: 8. 5cm diameter: 12. 5cm description: gray bell-shaped bowl, with a body decorated with stamped motifs. “kenjō-garatsu” style iconographic description: the body is decorated with stamped patterns of cranes and clouds. This motif of cranes with stylized clouds, called "unkaku-de", appears on large karatsu dishes dating from the mid-19th century. Apparently, the same stamp was used to create all of the decorations. This pattern appears to have already been used in the 17th century on the island of shikoku, at the odo factory, near kōchi in the south, as well as at yonose, near ozu in the west of japan.
