Lovis corinth painted the painting roman campagna in oil on canvas, measuring 71. 5 x 96 cm. Before the nazis seized power, it belonged to the private collection of the director of the berlin state art library, curt glaser (1879 - 1943). Glaser had also been dismissed from office under the "law for the restoration of the professional civil service" and eventually sold off large parts of his belongings to finance his emigration from nazi germany, including the roman campagna. The oil painting was one of the items auctioned on may 9, 1933 as the "collection and library of a berlin art lover" by the internationale kunst- und auktionshaus gmbh in berlin. Before 1945, it came into the collection of conrad doebbeke from berlin. He sold the work - together with more than 100 other works of largely unknown origin (provenance) - to the city of hanover in 1949. Since 1950, the painting had been on permanent loan from the city to the state gallery of the lower saxony state museum in hanover. After the hanover city council classified the painting as a work of art confiscated as a result of nazi persecution in accordance with the washington declaration, it was restituted to the heirs of the previous owner on september 24, 2007.
