Portrait of the goldsmith jean rameau, the artist's father-in-law, then aged 75, depicted hard at work. Jean rameau was a goldsmith in paris, place du carrousel. Rameau looks up from the sheet of paper on which he is perhaps sketching the terracotta sculpture that is depicted with great detail in the painting.
