The beakhead bulkhead of the english second-rate 'charles', 1668 a trimmed drawing showing a close three-quarter view of the beakhead bulkhead (that is, the foremost section) of the charles – identifiable from the lion figure-head, the top part of which is visible in the lower centre of the page. The forecastle and the ship’s distinctive projecting galleries are crowded with people. The image is an offset that has been worked with graphite overdrawing, and is similar to (though not taken from) the upper right section of paj2300. The beakhead bulkhead of the english second-rate 'charles', 1668 additional notes: charles was renamed hms st george in 1687 and reclassified as a second rate in 1691. In 1699–1701 she was rebuilt at portsmouth dockyard as a 90-gun second rate. [1] willem van de velde the elder (died 13 december 1693). Date: circa 1676.
