'Passing of a Great Queen' RMG PW1752, William Lionel Wyllie, 1901

'passing of a great queen' the funeral of queen victoria, with the ceremonial vessels taking her body from the isle of wight to portsmouth before it was transported by royal train to london. The work is signed ‘w l wyllie’, lower right. He exhibited a very similar painting of the title quoted here at the royal academy in 1901, which is now in the walker art gallery, liverpool. This is a related study or version. Queen victoria died on 22 january 1901 at osborne house on the isle of wight. She was buried in the mausoleum, frogmore, windsor, on 4 february 1901 following a state funeral in st george's chapel on 2 february 1901. After the funeral her coffin lay-in-state in the albert memorial chapel for two days and was then taken to the mausoleum by the royal horse artillery. See also pah4066. Passing of a great queen.
