fan decorated with caricatures of george sand and his entourage, accompanied by a legend relating the iconography of this decoration. Marks, inscriptions, hallmarks:
legend - "legend of the fan made in nohant in march 1838 by george sand/and auguste charpentier portrait painter. (the heads are by gavarni and/the bodies by a. Charpentier)/. The marquis de malphilinte (félicien mallefille) mysteriously going to his little house/of st germain en laie(sic), loses his way, his car and his horses and after having wandered all night, he is/surprised by the day in the gardens of paphos the first object he sees(sic) under the shade is/the incomparable nymph sandaraque (george sand) who disguised herself as a shepherdess under the name of piffoëlis to escape/from the passion of the immortal phoebus. She holds the sacred bird chopinios on her fist. (chopin) of the family/of colibiris, whose marvelous song cures colic and corns on the feet near her we see the/famous shepherd lystil (frantz liszt) who describes to her a clarinet concerto that he has just composed. /the shepherd croixillas (eugène delacroix) who excels in the art of painting, improvises while listening to him a/painting which will represent the concerto of. Clarinet painted in oil, natural size. This charming group immediately inspires a madrigal for the happy marquis of malphilinte (t. The shepherd bonne rose (de bonne-chose) and the young sylvain charpentis (august carpenter) listen to him with delight. Under the shadow of a weeping willow, at the edge of a pure wave we see the shepherd grzymalagose (count albert grzymala) who whispers an elegy. In the distance, the bocage fauna (pierre bocage) crosses the clear stream without the help of any bridge. In the crystal of the waves, we see (sic) the triton bignatys (bignat / (emmanuel arago) carefully searching for a star that the enchanter aragotos (françois arago) his father / let fall from his telescope. The young mauricolas (maurice sand) son of the zephyre and the nymph / sandaraque (g.
