iconographic description:
allegorical figure of the french republic commemorating the constitution promulgated on february 25, 1875, and offered to victor hugo for his 77th birthday, february 26, 1879. Sculpture which decorated the chiffonier (inv. N° 1138) of the poet's room on avenue d'eylau. It is visible in the drawings made on the day of his death on may 22, 1885. Historical commentary:
this print was commissioned by paul meurice for the opening of the museum in order to be placed in victor hugo's room and to allow its complete reconstruction. The original copy was bequeathed to léopold armand hugo (son of abel hugo and julie duvidal). It then passed to the marquis de montferrier who offered it to the museum in 1939 (mvhps1733).
