Portrait of manuel garcía barzanallana, first marquis of barzanallana. He was born and died in madrid (1817-1892). He held the treasury portfolio in 1856-1857, 1864-1865 and 1866-1868 under the presidency of general narváez. During the restoration, he was president of the council of state and the senate (1876-1881). He was also president of the royal academy of moral and political sciences. The sitter appears standing, wearing a minister's uniform and sword, wearing several plaques and bands on his chest, among them those of the orders of charles iii and isabella the catholic. The bicorn hat and two books rest on the table, resting the right hand on one of them. The setting is a living room interior with a lit fireplace and curtains. The arrangement of the figure and the careful treatment of the details of the clothing reveal the influence received from the painter federico de madrazo, an influence that dionisio fierros reflected especially in the making of portraits, a field in which he managed to achieve a certain prestige in madrid circles.
