iconographic description:
a family is visiting an orthopedic doctor. A strange machine resembling an arm press is visible in the left part of the image. All the characters have human silhouettes and animal heads of different species. The doctor, in a frock coat, is a parakeet. The mother of the family, in a dress and large veiled hat, is a stork. The father, holding his top hat in his hand, is a camel. The nurse with a breton headdress is a cow. The baby she is holding is a caterpillar. Finally, the son with the very hunched back is a marabout. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "one day at last, a day forever memorable [. . . ] the charmed universe was told that the reign of ugliness was going to disappear to make way for the definitive enthronement of beauty. Orthopedics had just been born! [. . . ] here is an interesting family which presents itself in body to one of the masters of science to beg him to straighten out this circular shoot, the hope of the house. "
