iconographic description:
in a plush interior furnished with a high bed and a gilded frame, three very dissimilar characters stand. A woman dressed extravagantly with a hat adorned with numerous ribbons and a coat covering her dress is escorted to the door by a man in a dressing gown and slippers. She turns an offended look towards him while he takes on a mocking look. In the doorway a clergyman wearing a skullcap observes the scene. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: " -- “go out, go out. It is broad daylight, it is eleven o'clock, and we can already hear noise in the castle. " everything vanished like a dream. I found myself wandering in the corridors before having regained my senses. How could i return to an apartment that i did not know? any misunderstanding was a indiscretion. I resolved to have taken a morning walk. " [extract from the physiology of marriage, by honoré de balzac]
