Rebeca matte bello (santiago, october 29, 1875-paris, may 15, 1929) was the first chilean woman to embrace the profession of sculptor. She was an independent artist who, however, coincided with the academic generation of the late 19th century, due to the aesthetic conception of her work, the value of the subject and a great mastery of technique in the use of noble materials. Great-granddaughter of the great humanist andrés bello lópez. She was appointed professor at the academy of fine arts in florence, a position that had never before been granted to a foreigner, much less to a woman.
