Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1941-05-28) letter no. 15 (1941-06-08) next letter (1941-06-16) envelope: front back text poland, 8 june 1941 dear parents! first of all, my warmest greetings from my new place of residence. Yes, the time has come, i have been sent to poland. I am here far behind warsaw, way in the east. The journey left at 5 a. M. On wednesday and we were here on friday evening. It is like it is everywhere in poland: lots of dust, sand and dirt. There is enough provision for us soldiers and we make life as comfortable as possible. Of course there is nothing going on here, no cinema, no restaurants, nothing. Not even electric light. I am sitting here with a candle stub and writing. The people are, as we expected, very friendly. You don't need to be afraid that something will happen to me here! we do our duty here just like in the barracks. Now the soldier's life is just beginning. It's a shame that a package takes so long to get home. You can trade eggs for a cigar butt here, so i could send you some. If you want to make me happy, please send me cigarettes, even "rolled" ones! there's nothing to smoke here. Date: 8 June 1941.
