View of Naples with the village of Chiaia from Pizzofalcone, 1706

Naples, the largo di palazzo (now piazza del plebiscito), before its arrangement (works started in 1809). On the left side of the view you can see a series of ecclesiastical buildings later replaced by the complex of san francesco di paola. Note on the left the ramp of the convent of the cross and the facades of the convents of san luigi di palazzo and santo spirito. On the right there is the "giant's fountain". Van wittel's work is known in at least four examples, all based on the preparatory drawing preserved in naples, in the san martino museum: the one closest to the intesa sanpaolo painting, dated 1706, is found in the cincinnati museum (ohio). It was created in rome: the dutch artist had moved there again after the viceroy who had invited him to naples in 1699 was removed from office in 1702, transforming him into a sort of court painter. Object Type: painting. Date: 1706. Medium: painting. Collection: Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano.
