Page 1 of the baron's diploma from franz joseph i (emperor of austria, 1830-1916) for the brothers dr. Wilhelm and dr. Alfred berger "on the basis of the entitlement acquired by their father dr. Johann berger, actual privy councillor and minister as knights of the order of the iron crown 1st class in accordance with the order's statutes". The aforementioned dr. Johann nepomuk berger (1816-1870) was a member of the landtag and reichsrat as well as a minister. Of his sons, dr. Alfred berger (1853-1912) worked as a dramaturge, theatre director and writer; from 1910 to 1912 he was director of the vienna burgtheater. Baron's diploma issued on july 4, 1878 in vienna, handwritten signature of the emperor. Parchment libel (format 38 x 29 cm), 7 pages, text in black and gold ink, lithographed border with leaves and tendrils. Coat of arms depiction signed "carl boess". Protective leaves between the calligraphed text pages. Cream-colored silk moiré endpaper. Violet velvet cover with gold-embossed imperial coat of arms, attached imperial lacquer seal in wooden capsule. Date: 4 July 1878.
