The duchesse de berry (1798–1870), by birth a princess of naples, was the widowed mother of the eventual heir to the french throne. Her portrait suggests the exaltation of a young woman who identified with the heroines of sir walter scott. The portraitist staged her against a threatening sky, her scarf swept away by the wind.
