Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as john charles stahlschmidt, bust-length, in military uniform and the royal guelphic order bears inscription and date 'john charles stahlschmidt/ act. Deputy purveyor to his maj. R. S forces/ 1815' (on reverse of canvas) and charged with indistinct coat-of-arms (upper left) john charles stahlschmidt of st john's lambeth and of albany cottage, weybridge, both in the county of surrey, received the medal of the guelphic order as a reward for his services as deputy purveyor of the hanoverian forces, 1813-14.
