Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-03-14) letter no. 145 (1943-03-16) next letter (1943-03-18) [the doctor could not do anything about it, he sent me] immediately to the hospital. Everyone in my unit was sorry that i was leaving. I was taken in a sleigh to the assembly point and from there in a vehicle to the main dressing station. When i got here, my temperature was taken - i didn't have one. I was undressed and laid on the table, anesthetized and operated on straight away! it all went very quickly and without pain! i didn't feel sick after the anesthesia either. Now i'm lying at the main dressing station in a panju [??] house with several comrades, mostly wounded. I'll probably stay here until everything has healed. Date: 16 March 1943.
