illustration for victor hugo's novel, "notre-dame de paris", volume 1, book 1, chapter 2, "pierre gringoire", this drawing provides the portrait of the character according to the following text: "an individual who stood on this side of the balustrade in the space left free around the marble table, and whom no one had yet seen, as his long and thin person was completely sheltered from any visual ray by the diameter of the pillar against which he was leaning, this individual, we say, tall, thin, pale, blond, still young, although already wrinkled on the forehead and cheeks, with bright eyes and a smiling mouth, dressed in a black serge, threadbare and shiny with age, approached the marble table and made a sign to the poor patient. But the other, stunned, did not see. Historical commentary:
engraved by fortuné méaulle, for the hugues edition of victor hugo's novel, "notre-dame de paris", volume 1, book 1, chapter 2, "pierre gringoire" this drawing is reproduced at the head of the chapter, p. 24 and indicated in the list of engravings under the title "pierre gringoire". This volume was published in 1877, the drawing is dated 1876. It was presented at the salon of 1877, under the number: "2283 - gringoire"
