The two monasteries (plate 44, first of 4 plates 44, 45, 46, 47). Paper, 74x39cm. Signed. Extraordinarily rigorous and complex composition, which succeeds in unifying by the sole formal logic of the graphics the heterogeneous spaces of three different scenes, and five series of calligraphic inscriptions in three distinct graphics. This masterpiece undoubtedly belongs to the artist's last years. The artifice of using two different ink tones to break the monotony of the line is now abandoned; the rhythmic intensity of the lines and dots alone is enough to animate the work. Date: between 1814 and 1849.
