Self-portrait, Ilya Repin, 1920

Self-portrait, Ilya Repin, 1920

In the winter of 1920, repin painted a self-portrait – the artist’s last large image of himself, a truly tragic document that could replace any other evidence of repin’s life in kuokkala in the post-revolutionary years. This portrait is repin’s dialogue with himself: in a semi-dark room, an old man, dressed in a winter coat and hat, peers intently into himself, as if trying to understand who he is and why he found himself in such a strange situation – alone, in the cold. And how the world around him had narrowed, how limited. Kuokkala had become a small abandoned village with boarded-up or dismantled houses in the border zone. “now it’s a desert,” repin wrote. (kirillina e. Repin in “penates”. Leningrad, 1977, p. 182). Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1920. Dimensions: height: 75.5 cm (29.7 in); width: 94 cm (37 in). Medium: oil. Depicted People: Ilya Repin. Collection: Музей-усадьба И. Е. Репина "Пенаты". REPIN portret REPIN. 1920
