The sewing holes on the leaves are still visible. This concerns the series entitled: cognoscite lilia, consisting of a title print and 60 engravings with 119 numbered representations of plants, flowers and fruits, decorated with rinceaux and small representations of animals. These are proofs of this series of engravings, for the inscriptions and, partly, for the numbering. The numbers have been applied by hand to some of the prints. The address of crispijn de passe and hans woutneel is still missing from the title print. The title was most likely engraved by matthias quad. This worked for de passe in cologne until 1604. The series must have been created in this year or before. At least before 1608, since the publisher hans woutneel died in or before that year. At least before 1608, since the publisher hans woutneel died in or before that year. The engravings are considered by ilja veldman and anthony griffiths to be the handiwork of crispijn de passe i. One of the prints from the series is missing (no. 21-22) and has been replaced by a colored print from a later edition (rp-p-2012-24-61), which is included under the title altera pars in the hortus floridus, published by crispijn de passe i and which further consists of plates by crispijn de passe ii. The prints from this edition have letterpress text on the verso. The replacement print was not part of the bound series as this sheet is the only one without sewing holes. Some of the plants, flowers and fruits in the cognoscite lilia go back to or are based on a series of watercolors by jacques le. Moyne from about 1580 and from 1585, now in the victoria and albert museum and the british museum (see p. Hulton, jacques le. Moyne, london 1977, volume 1, p. 156-162 and p. 165-173). Subject: what: flowers: carnationflowers (with name), botany. Credit line: donation from mr. H. B. Van der ven, the hague. Acquisition: donation 2011. Date: between 1600 and 1604.
