Ludwig achim von arnim (1781-1831). Engraving after an oil painting by ströhling. The leader of the second romantic circle first met goethe as a physics student in göttingen in 1801 at the head of a group of young academics, paying him an enthusiastic tribute. In 1805 he visited the poet in weimar. Goethe's approving review of the "wunderhorn" led to correspondence, another five-day visit in december 1808, the recommendation of the brothers grimm to goethe a year later, and the regular sending of his poems. After arnim's marriage to bettina brentano, they visited each other in 1811, which, after the well-known exchange of words between bettina and goethe's wife christiane, led to goethe breaking off relations. An outward reconciliation was followed by correspondence and a final, unsatisfactory visit in 1820. The unbridled abundance of ideas in arnim's poetry led goethe to compare it to a "barrel where the cooper has forgotten to tighten the hoops".
