St. Ansgar is painted against a light blue background, the color of the sky. The model is reminiscent of the first church that ansgar had built in the hammaburg area. The x-ray images taken as part of the investigations made old texts readable again under the "new color". It was thus possible to reconstruct that the black and gold border of the picture was originally red and had a text running around it that said (from latin into german): "in the year of our lord 1457, on the eve of the birth of christ, the venerable magister johan middelman, provost of this church, died. May his soul rest in peace. Amen. " the panel painting thus also served as an epitaph for the deceased. He had also written a message in his banner: "ora pro me beate pater anscharius" (pray for me, blessed father ansgar). Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1457.
