Ball at 20s by Kardovsky, Olga Nikolaevna of Russia, 1913

Paintings on russian history. D. N. Kardovsky. Ball at the st. Petersburg nobility assembly ball at the nobility assembly in 1913. Since june 14, 2013, the rotunda of the winter palace has been presenting to the public the painting by dmitry nikolaevich kardovsky (1866-1943) "ball at the st. Petersburg nobility assembly on february 23, 1913" and 47 portrait sketches for it. The exhibition is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the house of romanov and the 100th anniversary of the grand ball. The program of the anniversary celebrations of 1913 was extensive, the celebration lasted from february until autumn. It was a national event, marking the triumph of the state, power, and national spirit. The highest approved "ceremonial" appointed february 21, 1913 as the day of the ceremonial celebration of the 300th anniversary of the reign of the house of romanov. On this day at eight o'clock in the morning 21 salvoes of the guns of the peter and paul fortress announced to the residents of the capital the beginning of the celebrations. Religious processions stretched from the main churches of the capital to the kazan cathedral, and at the precisely appointed time the "highest train" with members of the royal family arrived. On the same day, public festivities took place in the capital and suburbs, and jubilee performances of historical content were presented in theaters. On february 22, in the nicholas hall of the winter palace, a ceremonial acceptance of congratulations by the emperor and empress took place. On february 23, 1913, the st. Petersburg nobility gave a "grand ball" at its assembly on mikhailovskaya street, which was attended by over 3,200 guests. This was the last large-scale celebration in pre-revolutionary russia. The ball began at half past nine in the evening, when the tsar, tsarina and members of the imperial family entered the tsar's box. The ball opened with a polonaise from m. I. Glinka's opera "a life for the tsar" performed by the ballroom orchestra of the life guards preobrazhensky regiment. Nicholas ii danced in the first pair with the wife of the st. Petersburg district leader of the nobility v. A. Somov, and empress alexandra feodorovna danced with the st. Petersburg district leader of the nobility s. M. Somov. After the polonaise, the dancing began - waltzes, a quadrille, a mazurka and a cotillion with an abundance of fresh flowers and bright ribbons. Nicholas ii and his daughter olga left the ball at twelve o'clock. The watercolor depicting the scene of the anniversary ball became one of the few large-format works by the outstanding russian artist dmitry nikolaevich kardovsky. A student of p. P. Chistyakov and i. E. Repin at the st. Petersburg academy of arts and professor a. Ashbe in munich, d. N. Kardovsky was a famous russian illustrator, genre painter, and theater artist. The hermitage painting "ball at the st. Petersburg noble assembly of 1913", not being a historical work per se, is executed according to the model of academic multi-figure compositions, with the difference that each character is captured with photographic accuracy and psychological authenticity. In the center of the composition, waltzing with his serene highness prince i. N. Saltykov is the 17-year-old grand duchess olga nikolaevna, the eldest daughter of the tsar, for whom this ball was the first "adult" holiday. The members of the imperial family are depicted in the royal box: nicholas ii, alexandra feodorovna, grand duchess maria feodorovna, grand duchess maria pavlovna, grand duchess victoria feodorovna, grand duke nikolai nikolaevich (the younger), grand duke peter nikolaevich and grand duke boris vladimirovich. Among the dancers are grand duchess olga alexandrovna, the emperor's sister, paired with her cousin grand duke dmitry pavlovich, the court's master of ceremonies, cornet p. M. Raevsky, and one of the first russian military pilots, lieutenant n. S. Voevodsky. Prominent political and government figures are easily recognizable in the crowd: state secretary a. G. Bulygin, who headed the "committee for organizing the celebration of the tercentenary of the reigning house of romanov", count a. A. Bobrinsky, and the director of the hermitage, count d. I. Tolstoy, the chief chamberlain, composer a. S. Taneyev. 47 portrait sketches made by the artist while creating the painting were provided for the exhibition by the grandson of dmitry nikolaevich kardovsky, nikolai petrovich veselkin, a corresponding member of the russian academy of sciences and director of the i. M. Sechenov institute of evolutionary physiology and biochemistry. Date: 1913.
