Edward Prince of Wales, attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger

Edward Prince of Wales, attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger

Possible portrait of edward, prince of wales. Black and coloured chalks, pen and indian ink on pink-primed paper, 27. 5 × 22. 9 cm, royal collection, windsor castle. The drawing is in bad condition, with a long diagonal tear on the left, touching the hair, and has been rubbed and retouched. According to art historian k. T. Parker, traces of holbein's left-handed shading may be seen in the hat and coat, but the penwork and hair are low quality, probably reworked at a later date. Not all scholars accept the attribution to holbein (roy strong, tudor and jacobean portraits, london: hmso, 1969, p. 92). It is also not certain that the sitter is prince edward, the future edward vi (the inscription was added at a later date). If it is him, he would be five or six years old (parker, pp. 55–56). Date: 1542/43 if the sitter is Prince Edward; otherwise 1532–43..
